Our first annual conference on resiliency.

AIA South Carolina is pleased to announce Resilience: By Design, its first annual conference on resiliency. The statewide flooding of October of 2015 and the continued challenges of rebuilding and recovery have proven the need for a more robust Resiliency plan in communities across the state. While storm related damage has long been a design consideration across South Carolina, today’s practice must continue to evolve and address additional challenges beyond weather and climate. The AIA’s official policy statement on Resilience reads that:

Buildings and communities are subjected to destructive forces from fire, storms, earthquakes, flooding, and even intentional attack. The challenges facing the built environment are evolving with climate change, environmental degradation, and population growth. Architects have a responsibility to design a resilient environment that can more successfully adapt to natural conditions and that can more readily absorb and recover from adverse events. The AIA supports policies, programs, and practices that promote adaptable and resilient buildings and communities.

This one day “mini-conference” will allow architects from across the state and region to gather, learn, and discuss the vital role that architects play in both Reactive and Proactive Resiliency Planning and Design.
