Join over 88,000 architects throughout the world, and over 900 architects in South Carolina, and become a member of the American Institute of Architects – the leading professional organization of architects, emerging professionals and allied partners since 1857. For over 150 years, the AIA has served architects throughout the country by raising the standards of architectural practice and education, and advocating for the profession.
Founded in 1913, the South Carolina chapter was instrumental in the establishment of the SC Board of Architectural Examiners, the development of the first statewide building codes and the creation of a stand-alone architecture degree program at Clemson University which also celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year.
Building on this legacy, we continue to work with legislators and policy makers to promote the profession and guard against encroachment on our practice – evident in the recent successful defeats of stock school plans legislation and an interior design practice act, the passage of the Architects and Engineers Volunteer Act in 2012 and Tort Reform Acts in 2005 and 2011 (which, among other protections for design professionals, shortened the statute of repose from thirteen to eight years) and helping draft language on a new design-build/public-private partnership bill.
But advocating for our members goes beyond lobbying at the State House. It includes providing the benefits our members need to grow their businesses and manage their careers. There are many benefits you’ll receive when you join the AIA, but here are a few of our favorites:
