SUMMARY:AIA Hilton Head April Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:RSVP for the Luncheon HERE by TODAY @ 4PM!!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAIA Hilton Head April Lunch and Learn: \nJoin us at Venue 1223 in Bluffton for this month’s lunch and learn on\nUnderstanding Stone Wool (Mineral Wool)\npresented by Rockwool \nCourse Description: \nUnderstanding Stone Wool (Mineral Wool) in Interior and Exterior Applications – Solutions for Thermal\, Fire and Sound Control. The net energy savings realized in a properly insulated building are well understood. However\, as design professionals strive to maximize thermal resistance\, yet reduce mass in the wall assembly\, insulation is increasingly being positioned in both the stud wall and the exterior side of the building envelope. This split insulation concept has introduced a number of design issues and concerns; particularly as relates to fire resistance\, moisture management\, and wall drying rates. This program focuses on the unique properties of stone wool insulation\, and suggests how it can improve thermal\, fire\, water and sound suppression performance in a well detailed wall assembly. \nWhat: Understanding Stone Wool (1 HSW/SD LU)\nWhen: Wednesday\, April 8th\, 12:30 – 1:30PM\nWhere: Venue 1223 (next to Downtown Deli)\n1223 May River Road\, Bluffton\, SC 29910\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP for the Luncheon HERE by TODAY @ 4PM!!

The design emphasizes views towards the park and stadium for the residential units and creates a dynamic building that takes advantage of the natural topography of the site. The new structure features a butterfly roof that relates to the iconic form of the nearby stadium. The design is contemporary yet blends with the more traditional Daniel Island architecture. An inviting public porch activates Seven Farms Drive while generous private porches overlook the lush landscape of the adjacent park.\nThe exterior is nearing completion\, but the interior is in various phases of construction. Join us for an informative tour of this mixed use building.\nWe will meet at the site entrance at 4:30pm; Daniel Island has free street parking or there is a large parking lot behind the building. Closed-toe shoes\, hard hats\, and safety vests are required for all attendees; please bring your own as limited PPE will be available on site.\nThis event is open to AIA Members only and HSW Credit will be logged for all attendees. \n\nHappy Hour : After the hard hat tour\, we will meet nearby (Location TBD) for a happy hour at 5:30. We would love to see you even if you cannot make the hard hat tour!

SUMMARY:CACC + AIA Charleston Lecture Series: B Sanborn
DESCRIPTION:Lunch at 12:00 pm\nLecture at 12:30 pm\nCEUs will only be given to AIA members attending in person. There will be a sign-in sheet at the door to receive credit\n\n\n\n\nResearching the Human Experience: Aligning Mixed-Methods Rigor with Industry Reality\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis talk explores how designers can leverage interdisciplinary and mixed-methods research in practice. Drawing on experience leading research at a large integrated design firm\, we’ll examine three essential approaches: data triangulation\, empirical observation\, and qualitative participatory methods. A key focus will be aligning rigorous research methods with the realities of industry—including client perspectives\, budget constraints\, and project timelines. Through case studies\, including co-creating measures of success and removing barriers to adoption for materials\, attendees will see how systematic research methods translate into actionable design insights. This session demonstrates how research becomes a strategic practice rather than a one-off project. \nB Sanborn \nB Sanborn specializes in helping organizations use research to transform ad-hoc decision-making into evidence-based design. Their methodology bridges anthropology\, environmental psychology\, and organizational behavior to reveal patterns in how teams collaborate\, how stakeholders engage with research\, and how evidence influences design decisions. Through their work at DLR Group and in industry research associations\, B helps practitioners build research thinking into their design process. B currently serves as Design Research Leader at DLR Group\, where they’ve spent eight years building the firm’s research program from a solo practice into a team of four\, establishing research strategy\, capability frameworks\, and ROI models for integrated design firms. They are also a Principal in the firm. B holds an MS in Environmental Psychology from Cornell University with a minor in Organizational Behavior and a BA in Archaeology and Physical Anthropology from CSU Sacramento. Their published research on coworking environments and workplace dynamics appears in the Journal of Corporate Real Estate and design theory handbooks. They serve as 2025-26 Board Chair of the Environmental Design Research Association\, sit on the Center for Health Design’s EDAC Advisory Council\, and contribute to the American Psychological Association’s Climate Change Task Force. B has studied theater and dance alongside their research career\, bringing elements of improv\, spatial dynamics\, and embodied listening to their work—informing a research philosophy based on negotiating shared movement within structure. Attendees will explore the step-by-step process of signing on\, managing the Design Data Exchange (DDx)\, and strategically presenting predicted energy data to align with the net-zero by 2030 vision. Featuring practical tools\, real-world examples\, and expert insights\, the session aims to equip firms with the knowledge and confidence to meet annual reporting mandates and drive continual performance improvement. \nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the Purpose & Significance\n\nDescribe the mission of the AIA 2030 Commitment and how it upholds the architecture profession’s role in achieving carbon neutral buildings by 2030.\n\n\nBecome a Signatory\n\nIdentify and navigate the initial steps to sign the Commitment\, including creating a firm account in AIA’s Design Data Exchange (DDx) and submitting the commitment letter. \n\n\nMaster Annual Reporting via DDx\n\nClarify reporting windows—typically January through March with the due date of March 31—and recognize that firms may access and input data year-round.\n\n\nCapture Required Data Parameters\n\nEnumerate the essential data fields required for each project\, including:\n\nProject stage (conceptual\, schematic\, development\, construction docs)\nProject scope (architectural with HVAC/envelope changes or interiors with lighting design)\nGeographic location (country\, zip code or city)\nBaseline Energy Use Intensity (EUI) and predicted EUI (pEUI)\, leveraged via AIA’s Zero Tool or other baselines\nWhether actual energy use data is tracked\nFor interiors-only: lighting power density and applicable energy code defaults\n\n\n\n\nEngage with Expanded Metrics\n\nIncorporate new elements into the reporting\, such as:\n\nFuel sources to enable Operational Carbon Intensity (OCI)\nEmbodied Carbon Intensity (ECI) via Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (WBLCA)\nParticipation in the new Embodied Carbon-Only project page within DDx \n\n\n\n\nInterpret Reporting Outcomes\n\nAnalyze “By the Numbers” reporting summaries—e.g.\, in 2023\, 490 firms reported ~24\,742 projects across nearly 4 billion GSF; a 50% pEUI reduction plateau; 7\,067 projects included embodied carbon data; renewables featured in 2\,163 projects; and approximately 38.5 million metric tons of CO₂ avoided.Improve Firm Performance Year-over-Year\nLearn how consistent annual reporting fosters data-driven improvements in design outcomes\, supports firm benchmarking\, elevates sustainability culture\, and informs recruitment or client proposals. \n\n\nLeverage AIA Resources & Community Support\n\nNavigate available support tools such as DDx help pages\, how-to videos\, recorded webinars\, and open office hours—especially helpful \n\n\n\n
