We will walk the greenway and enter the building on axis. *See map image at bottom of tours page.\nStop 1: 10:00 AM: Albert Simons Center for the Arts\, College of Charleston\, 54 St Philip St\, Charleston\,  Liollio\nCompleted\n(Shown above) Amid a dense historic district\, this center for the arts is “the artistic heartbeat of Charleston.” A venue for Spoleto Festival\, it is the most publicly visited building on campus\, hosting fine and performing arts programs for students and visitors alike to celebrate and partake in artistic disciplines.  This 75\,000 SF renovation and 15\,000 SF expansion project aims to create a resilient urban response to showcasing the arts\, signaling to the community the creativity within\, moderating between history and progress\, and enhancing connections to the historic campus. Facing the historic Cistern Yard and Randolph Hall (c.1828)\, the Simons Center serves as the cultural hub for Charleston SC. The new entrance design creates a focal terminus on axis with the historic Green Way\, a beautifully landscaped and historic component of the campus and the city\, drawing patrons in and connecting students and faculty to the surrounding landscape. With large windows to fill the volume with natural light\, a modern façade reflecting the historic fabric of the Green Way and carefully chosen brick as a nod to historic Randolph Hall\, the entrance is meant to subtly grab visitors’ attention as they make their way from Randolph Hall to St. Philip Street. The expanded lobby offers increased exhibition space and a revitalized courtyard\, serving as a venue for campus and community events. Additional program includes replacement of mechanical\, electrical\, fire protection\, and plumbing systems; roof replacement\, and structural upgrades to the decking assembly; a new black box theatre; existing proscenium theatre and recital hall upgrades; renovated support spaces; additional and renovated classrooms; enhanced technology; office spaces; and upgraded art teaching studios and classrooms. The interior approach transforms dim\, uninviting spaces to foster collaboration across curricula\, breathing new life into an integral community resource. This project was guided by four key goals: Modernizing Arts Education\, Sustainability and Resiliency in the Urban Coastal Environment\, Connecting History and the Future\, and Showcasing the Arts. Sustainability strategies aim to achieve Two Green Globes certification\, focusing on energy efficiency\, water conservation\, and the use of sustainable materials. SUMMARY:AIA SC: Safety Assessment Training (SAP) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The AIA SAP Training Workshop is coming to Charleston! \nJoin us on Saturday May 2\, 9:00AM-3:30 PM at the Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston\, SC for this training workshop.  The Safety Assessment Program (SAP) is administered by California’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) and is nationally recognized as a standard for disaster-affected building evaluation.   SAP instructor and structural engineer Patrick Murren will teach participants to conduct rapid evaluations of structures affected by earthquakes\, wind\, water\, and more. \nLunch is included. \nEligible Participants: \n·  Architects\, engineers\, and certified building inspectors who complete the workshop and who hold a SAP-approved license will be registered as a certified SAP Evaluator with CalOES. \n·  Unlicensed attendees are welcome to attend and will receive a certificate of completion after the workshop.  Certification as a SAP Evaluator will be possible if and when a SAP-approved license is subsequently obtained. \n·  Though the content of the workshop is technical and targeted toward building professionals\, emergency management officials are also encouraged to attend.  The workshop provides valuable insights regarding common building damage\, the logistics of building evaluator disaster response\, and ways in which volunteer professionals assess buildings with the goals of reducing shelter needs and expediting disaster recovery. \nProgram Details: This training session will refer to the SAP Evaluator Handbook Applied Technology Council (ATC) Manuals 20-1 and 45.  Attendees will learn to identify typical building damage modes an to assess damage-affected structures per ATC procedures.  Example case-studies will be presented.  The in-person nature of the workshop will also facilitate interactive discussion with the trainer about deployment experiences. \nLearning Objectives: \n·  Recognize the important role architects and associated building professionals play in disaster preparedness\, response\, and recovery. \n·  Accurately conduct a post-disaster rapid building assessment and complete appropriate damage assessment forms. \n·  Demonstrate understanding of the Applied Technology Council’s ATC 20 Post earthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings and ATC 45 Safety Evaluation of Buildings after Windstorms and Floods damage assessment procedures. \n·  Earn Cal OES SAP certification. \n5 AIA HSW/LUs will be earned or 5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). \nMANUALS ARE NOT INCLUDED WITH REGISTRATION! \nInstructions to order manuals: Evaluator Field Manuals | ATC 45 | ATC 20 \nParticipants are responsible for purchasing these texts from ATC. \nClick here to purchase ATC 45 \nClick here to purchase ATC 20

Designed by Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC)\, and being constructed by Thompson Turner Construction\, this building will be a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to showcasing and advancing the latest technology and tools of the welding trade. With a nationwide shortage in welding expertise this building is needed more than ever to train the future of the welding trade. \nAIA Greenville is dedicated to building a diverse talent pipeline for local architects. Every year\, AIAG provides a scholarship to one student at Greenville Technical College majoring in Architectural Engineering Technology that covers half of their tuition costs. All of the proceeds from this building tour will go into a scholarship fund for a GTC student this year.  Any contribution is appreciated as we work together towards a goal of $1\,200.
